Winter Festivities in Banff!

Winter has truly arrived in Banff with the huge amount of snow that we've received over the last week; I dare say the town has been transformed into a true 'Winter Wonderland!'   Wondering why you should visit Banff over the next while?  Here are the top reasons:

*Nov30/Dec01 and Dec07/08 - World Cup Alpine Skiing at the Lake Louise Ski Area

*Dec07 - Christmas in the Rockies.  Enjoy a holiday themed day with Festive Fun with Santa, Christmas Carols, Fred Penner, Vinyl Cafe Christmas with Stuart McLean and the Santa Claus Parade of Lights!!! Full details available here.

*Banff/Lake Louise offers amazing downhill skiing options - visit www.skibig3.com to learn more about the three different ski hills in the area

* Not a downhill skier?  There is still SO much to do in Banff for you including snowshoeing on the Banff Springs Golf Course, cross country skiing, ice skating or a winter hike!  Don't have the equipment to try these activities out?  No problem; all Banff Aspen Lodge guests receive a 10% discount on all winter equipment rentals from Snowtips.

*Just want a relaxing weekend away?  Visit one of Banff's many spas, visit one of our many shops and enjoy one of our many delicious restaurants!  My favourites include El Toro, The Maple Leaf, Coyotes, Banff Balkan, The Bison and the Bear Street Tavern!

*On Saturday January 14th, Banff will be hosting the Canadian Olympic Team Block Party!  Banff has been given the honour of sending off our Olympic Athletes before they leave for Sochi 2014.  George Stroumboulopoulos of the CBC will be hosting this event and Juno award winning bands The Sheepdogs and The Arkells will be performing!  Full details available here.

The above are just a few of the many things happening in the Bow Valley this winter.  Time spent in Banff/Lake Louise is a must-do for everyone in the winter and we look forward to seeing you soon!

Hiking with the Larches

Fall is an amazing time to explore Banff/Lake Louise and Kananaskis Country.  Things are a little quieter and the hiking provides you with incredible views due to the needles on the larch trees changing to a brilliant yellow colour!  One of the best hikes to see the larch views is the Larch Valley Hike starting at Moraine Lake in Lake Louise.  Hike details are available here.  Parking can be limited in the area so Parks Canada is offering free shuttle buses from the Lake Louise overflow parking lot (located just before the Lake Louise exit when traveling west on Highway One) to and from Moraine Lake from 9am-6pm on Sept21, 22, 28 and 29.  The shuttles will run every 20 minutes and are a great opportunity to avoid traffic jams and get out exploring quicker!

This year there is a new hiking opportunity in Kananaskis Country at Fortress Mountain.  White Mountain Adventures is offering half day guided walks on the mountain that includes transportation from the bottom of the access road.  This area really has been difficult to access in the past and has been rarely visited in the last ten years; now some of the best alpine hiking in Kananaskis Country is within easy reach!  The walk is around 2.5 hours (five to seven kilometers in length) and led by experienced naturalists/guides.   The best part is that your scenic views will include many golden larches located throughout the forests!  Reservations are required and full trip details are available through White Mountain Adventures

So take some time this fall to explore Banff, Lake Louise and Kananaskis Country!  Banff Aspen Lodge is offering a special price discount for all Facebook Friends and Twitter Followers; like us on Facebook or follow on Twitter and receive savings up to 45%! Our 'Larch Season Savings' are available here.

2013 Canada's Parks Day in Banff National Park!

The 2013 Canada's Parks Day takes place this Saturday; July 20th.    First celebrated in 1990, Canada's Parks Day is an event that occurs all over Canada in national parks, national historic sites, provincial parks, territorial parks and community parks.  Different unique events within the parks take place from coast to coast and brings together Canadians from all over!

Here is what is happening in Banff National Park this year:

*Teddy Bear Picnic - 11am - 3pm at the Cave and Basin.  Bring a picnic lunch and show off your favourite teddy bear at this annual picnic!  Enjoy live interpretive events and an interactive story hall at the iconic Cave & Basin.  (Site entry fees apply)

*Saving Wild Trout in Banff National Park - 11am - 2pm at the Corral Creek picnic area on the Bow Valley Parkway.  Learn the different kinds of trout that swim in our rivers and check out the electro fishing demonstration from 1-1:30pm

*On the Right Track - 2pm - Corral Creek picnic area on the Bow Valley Parkway.  Discover who else other than humans use the park hiking trails.  Fun games and activities for the whole family!

*Bear Guardians - 7:30pm - Johnston Canyon Campground Theatre.  A constant in Banff National Park is the presence of bears.  Find out what the park is doing to meet the challenge of managing bears and people.

*Fireside Chat - 7:30pm - Two Jack Lakeside Campground - learn more about the natural and cultural world of Banff National Park from a Parks Canada interpreter

Ensure you explore your local National Park this Saturday and hope to see some of you in Banff!

The Banff Centre

I have lived in Banff for just over seven years now and I realized recently that I have not been taking advantage of the fact that I live in the same town as The Banff Centre; an amazing facility recognized globally in the Arts Community.  I've been to a few shows now and then and recently attended a concert by American singer/guitarist Erik Bib and West African singer / guitarist Habib Koite. These two men have amazing talent and I was awed by their performance.  My husband and I have now decided to purchase an 'Art Lover's Pass' in order to attend more performances at the Banff Centre throughout the summer.

The Banff Centre also offers Educational Courses and Leadership Programs and their Art Programs include dance, film, indigenous arts, theatre, photography, opera, voice and much much more!   If you are an Artist who is looking for a new challenge, check out the different Art Programs available here.

Some of the events coming up in the next few weeks include:
*Saturday March 16 ~ a one on one conversation with Academy Award winning director Oliver Stone (limited seats still available).
*Saturday March 23 ~ Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival Special Screening; a selection of award winning films from the 2012 Festival!
*Sunday April 21 ~ Cowboy Junkies
*Saturday June 11 ~ Performance in the Park - Serena Ryder, Coeur de Pirate and Said The Whale.

The Banff Centre's full events schedule can be found here

Whether you live in Banff or are just visiting for a few days, ensure you check to see what is happening at the Banff Centre and take full advantage of everything it offers.
